christopher lasch has some very interesting ideas in 'the culture of narcissism'. one is that he very much distinguishes performance from narcissism, in fact, he says, narcissism has destroyed 'performance'. he gives the example of plays, movies, or writing that are self-conscious of their own performativity, that feel the need to call attention to their own artifice -- he views this very negatively. I'm reading his chapter on sport and it's highly interesting, because Lasch views undirected play, "pointless" activity based on some sort of display of mastery, as very important, and something that modern sport has eroded, by focusing on competition and celebrity.
